Wedding: Kristie & Jeremy - Annandale, VA
Happy Anniversary to Kristie & Jeremy!
It’s not everyday you get to photograph your childhood friends’ wedding… and it’s certainly not everyday you get to photograph part of the wedding at your own parents’ house. For this reason, this wedding was an emotional one to capture. Kristie and I - along with her brother, Scott - grew up together. I was either down at their house or they were up at ours. We spent Saturday nights and holidays together, swam on the same teams, fished our neighborhood creek together, terrorized the neighborhood on bicycles together, and got into good-ole fashion mischief together.
Who doesn’t love a “homegrown wedding?”

When Kristie introduced us to Jeremy - I knew he was the right guy for her. After courting each other for a few years (and with a pandemic raging), they decided it was time to tie the knot. For reasons important to the bride and groom - their wedding date could not wait! For any couple who planned a 2020 wedding (and actually got married in 2020) - I think it’s fair to say that the couple’s decision to wed was not taken lightly.
Oddly enough, when I first heard of Kristie’s wedding, I already had a plane ticket in hand because I was flying home to help my folks with a “family matter”. It seemed “fate” had two reasons to bring me back in good ole Northern Virginia; one to assist my folks and two - to capture Kristie’s special day. Within a matter of weeks, Kristie and Jeremy planned a Micro “Covid Safe” Wedding; taking every precaution reasonably possible. The ceremony was held at Green Spring Gardens in our hometown of Annadale, Virginia.

Content: Yoga Instructor - Akilah
I had a wonderful time working with Akilah on this photo shoot! I’ve tried yoga a handful of times, although after photographing Akilah - she made me want to jump right back into the practice. While her career started in the field of law, she left her desk-job to pursue a new path. As we walked around Coney Island and Ferry Reach, she told me her backstory and goals for her newly founded yoga instructor position. To learn more about her business, please check out her website.

Maternity: J & M - St. Regis, Bermuda
Y’all. There are some amazing coconut palm trees at the St. Regis. Let’s go check ‘em out!
I met up with Jenny and Mark at Bermuda’s newest hotel - the one and only St. Regis - to capture their babymoon and celebrate the upcoming arrival of their daughter. We had blast during the photo shoot! Not only did we create amazing images but we also formed a friendship - which is always the best part of my job! I look forward to their return as a family of three in the near future!

Wedding: M & C - Private Home, Bermuda
Who doesn’t love a backyard wedding? Furthermore, who doesn’t love a backyard wedding with a gorgeous water view on Memorial Day Weekend?! I first met Maddy - the founder and owner of Novah Swimwear - and Caleb at a New Years’ Eve Party at The Loren Resort, where Jim and I were working the photo booth. In the Fall of 2020, they reached out about wedding photography! Finally, the day came when Maddy & Caleb said “I do” at her parents’ house in Bermuda. Days after the wedding, the couple hosted an amazing wedding celebration on The Zara.

Wedding: K & B - Chanler at Cliff Walk - Newport, RI
Spring is the perfect time of year for daffodils, rabbits, and weddings in Rhode Island! Kayleigh and Brian tied the knot at The Chanler at Cliff Walk just as all the florals in Newport were bursting!
I first began working with K & B in May of 2019, while I was in Scotland photographing a wedding. Despite the time-zone difference, my initial phone call with Kayleigh was about two hours long; it felt as though I was speaking with an old friend who was planning her wedding. They came to Bermuda for a pre-planning trip and we scheduled an engagement session - that they nailed! Wedding plans were moving along “swimmingly” and then - Covid. Like so many other couples, Kayleigh and Brian held out hope that their April 2020 wedding in Bermuda would occur, although we know how that story went. So… K & B re-planned their wedding - not once, not twice, but three times; finally, moving the wedding from Bermuda to Rhode Island. So - off I went to join K & B in New England with my luggage, camera gear, my mom - aka my trusty travel companion to assist while Jim stayed home with our cats! K & B’s spring time New England wedding was magical - from the daffodils in bloom to the weather - the day could simply not be beat!
There are some couples you have the opportunity of working with who magically - become life-long friends. I can easily say this of Kayleigh & Brian. Many congrats to Kayleigh & Brian on this special time in their lives! Thank you both for allowing me to be a part of it!

Happy 1st Day of Spring!
This time of year, I always think back to the many visits my family and I made to the Tidal Basin to check out the Cherry Blossoms Festivals and see the blooms. Four years ago, my mom and I went downtown to check out the trees. After driving around for what seemed like an eternity, we found parking. Mom and I waltzed around the sidewalk, took a bunch of photos, visited the Dr. Martin Luther King’s Monument, and enjoyed the rays of sunshine coming down.

We even bumped into our cousins who were there doing the exact same thing; checking out the Cherry Blossoms. We had a blast! That past trip in 2017 was the last time I was able to see the Cherry Blossoms in person. With the Cherry Blossoms Festival being online this year, I’m stoked to be able to participate again. Maternity: Khaoula and Mafaz - Southlands & Marley Beach
Who doesn’t love a little maternity shoot in both a jungle and at the beach? I had a fabulous time with this young couple! Khaoula and I hit it off at once with our connections to Morocco; she being born and raised in Casablanca and my Aunt coming from the same city! I can’t wait to work with them as a family of three in the near future.
Many congrats to Kaoula & Mafaz on their upcoming arrival! These two were so in love and were very excited to meet their daughter - who arrived a few short weeks after our photo shoot. I had a wonderful time working with these two; can’t wait to capture them as a family of three!
Home Series: Tips for Newborn & Baby Sessions
Photoshoots that take place at home are an awesome idea on many levels. One’s house is a place of comfort, an escape from the "toils” of the outside world, a home for our pets, and a place of personal expression. For all of these reasons, one’s personal dwelling makes for an excellent location choice for a photoshoot. Regardless of the photographic genre - wedding, engagement, maternity, newborn, family, or content imagery - photographs taken at home are unique. This week, we are discussing six tips to keep in mind for newborn & baby photo sessions that occur at home.
We’re continuing our “Home Series” blog posts, which include tips for photo shoots that take place at home - which is an awesome idea on many levels. One’s house is a place of comfort, an escape from the "toils” of the outside world, a home for our pets, and a place of personal expression. For all of these reasons, your personal dwelling makes for an excellent location choice for a photoshoot. Regardless of the photographic genre - wedding, engagement, maternity, newborn, family, or content imagery - photographs taken at home are unique! This week, we are discussing six tips to keep in mind for newborn & baby photo sessions that occur at home.
1 — TIME — 1
Given the nature of photoshoots at home, we recommend starting out with a 90-minute session for family portraits. This will allow for enough time to capture photos both outside and inside the house. In many situations, I may also opt to move furniture or items on tops of tables around to avoid clutter and/or to ensure a nice colour scheme in the shot. If you have a large group of people, a 2-hour session may also be recommended. If you are planning to book a newborn session, these start at 2 hours to allow time to take photos but also to allow time for the inevitable “nappy change” and feeding that will likely be needed.
2 — ACTIVITY — 2
When working with young children, it’s always a great idea to engage in an activity that will be enjoyed. Not only does this help to keep the kids engaged but it also helps me - your photographer - capture images that are more realistic; more candid! You may opt to read a book, to complete a drawing, or to play peek-a-boo! This tip relates back to our first one - that of “Time”; be sure to allow time for a fun activity!
3 — COLOUR — 3
Consider the main colours that are in your home. Do you have yellow walls? Blue throw pillows? Do you notice any “pops” of colour around your house? For example, a flash of red found on a Paddington Bear stuffed animal. How about the colours that are found just outside the house; in the yard or on the patio. Now consider the colour of the outfit you and others will be wearing during the shoot. Ensure that colours match and avoid clashing patterns.
4 — WINDOW LIGHT — 4
There are many ways to use light coming through a window. In one of the photo example above, we see the window light used to create a silhouette. In the other photo example, we see window light used to create soft light. Both ways of using window light can leave very different artistic results. When selecting a room for your indoor photos, ensure that the room has large windows. It’s also a good idea to take note of what time of day the most light comes through that window. For example, does that room get a lot of light in the morning or in the afternoon?
5 — ACTION — 5
Any parent will tell you that their kids move at the pace of lightening. We spoke about the importance of allowing enough time to photograph activities with newborns and babies. These moments will likely lead to us also capturing “action”; whether it is jumping on a bed, shuffling around the room during an “off moment”, or shared kisses. For babies, running outdoors makes for a great shot but it also allows little ones to “burn off some steam”! I usually suggest waiting until the end of the photoshoot for the “action” moments, although they may occur naturally during the session.
6 — COMFORT — 6
Utilize a room in your home where your little one will feel comfortable. This will inevitably allow for the newborn and/or baby to feel relaxed and for photos to be captured more easily. The temperature of the room will also be important, particularly for newborns. Ensure the room is warm enough - or in the summer months, cool enough - for the baby to be comfortable. For certain newborn photos, we’ll want him or her to sleep soundly to allow time to capture close-ups of tiny hands and feet. If you have a White Noise Sound Machine, this is the perfect time to use it! A little white noise goes a long way to help baby sleep right through his or her newborn session!
